The Unsellable Best Seller & the Pitfalls of Publishing
ARISE:
The Rise of the Indie-Author
There is a phenomena gaining more and more momentum. With the advent of technological changes in the print industry, advancements with ebook potentials, and the struggling publishing sector, we are seeing the rise of the independent author and self-publishing on a scale hitherto never before witnessed. The rise of the indie-author is upon us and may very well be one of the most viable methods forward in literature. It is the landscape of innovation. But as with any new and growing phenomena the unfortunate fact remains, a shadow industry follows it, preying upon its ascendance. Author Michel Weatherall (of award winning Broken Keys Publishing) has over 3 decades background in the ever evolving print & publishing industry and knows well the pitfalls of self-publishing. Having aided several local and upcoming authors caught unawares of the predatory grey-area betwixt self-publishing and traditional publishing, (and let's be honest, there is no legitimate area between these two), this is a speech/workshop you don't want to miss! From understanding what Print-on-Demand services really mean (and learning enough to make an educated decision), price-points of your print-edition books, and how to avoid “The Unsellable Book” “Independent Self-publishers” (the Tellwells out there), publishers, printers and print-brokers: They are NOT all the same: learn the differences before the differences learn you. ~ ~ ~ The secondary topic of poetry will also be spoken of. With two collection of poetry published (A Dark Corner of My Soul and Sun & Moon) and the 2019 Pushcart Prize in Poetry Nominee (for Sun & Moon's Eleven's Silent Promise), Ottawan poet Michel Weatherall will engage in conversation on topics like the audience/marketability of poetry, selling themes and the vulnerability of its writing. ~ ~ ~ Please note: As of March 16th the North Grenville Public Library programming has been cancelled as a safety precaution do to Covid-19. This speech/discussion being presented as a video webinar is being explored and could be a possibility. Although I cannot foresee these precautionary measures extending to the end of April we will keep you updated as more information becomes available. Be safe and intelligent. No panic shopping. With a small degree of diligence this will pass.
